One of The Casting of Frank Stone's early scenes shows our protagonists driving along a narrow road with extremely high verges. Very early on I wanted to recreate a real-world road for this portion of the game and I had the perfect location in mind. Not far from our studio, we collected references of Hound House Road, which is known locally as 'the tree tunnel' for obvious reasons.
While this initially began as just a source for reference, it quickly became clear that the best way to capture the creepy, confined, unique road was to scan it, which is exactly what we did. So, one frigid autumn morning, I set out with my camera and high-vis vest and scanned a long section of the road. The images were processed with Adobe Lightroom and the model was generated in RealityCapture. With the scan done, this was then broken up into modular pieces and used in-engine to re-create the entire road.
Thanks to Martin Clemie for his help on the clean-up and pulling the scene together!
